Vasectomy After Care

Scalpel Free Vasectomy - After Care Instructions

Here is some important information regarding vasectomy aftercare following your procedure.

Driving your car

If you take oral sedation tablets, you must not drive afterwards for 24hrs. Please arrange for someone to collect you or plan alternative transport such as a taxi. If your procedure is performed under local anaesthesia only (without oral sedation), you may be able to drive home after a short period of rest, provided you feel well.

Pain relief

Mild discomfort or pain after the procedure is common. You may take simple pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen (if suitable for you and you have no allergies, asthma sensitivity, or history of stomach ulcers) at standard recommended doses. These are available over the counter at pharmacies. Applying an ice pack to the scrotal area for 10–15 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Always place a cloth or towel between the ice pack and your skin to avoid direct contact. Severe pain (greater than 7 out of 10) is not expected. If you experience significant pain or have any concerns, please contact the clinic.

Shower or Bath

You may shower the day after your procedure. It is best to keep the area dry for the first 24 hours. For the next 2 weeks, you should avoid soaking in baths, swimming pools, or spas. When showering, allow water to run gently over the area without scrubbing. If a shower is not available, you may kneel in a bath and gently sponge water over the area. Avoid using excessive soap, shampoos, or applying powders such as talcum powder to the area.

Underwear

It is recommended to wear supportive, close-fitting underwear (please bring a pair with you on the day of the procedure if possible). Continue wearing firm-fitting briefs day and night for about one week, as they provide better scrotal support than loose boxer shorts.

Take a Rest

Following your procedure, the local anaesthetic wears off after about 4-8 hrs. It is sensible to plan to relax at home for a few days before undertaking work or exercise.

Avoid Strenous Exercise

We also advise that you avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting or driving long distances (continuous driving for 2hrs) for 1-2 weeks to minimize discomfort.

Healing

The cut ends of the tubes will heal with some scar tissue around it. This may be felt as a small lump and sometimes tender area just above the testicle. This is quite normal, but if you do become concerned about any unusual lumps see your GP or contact the clinic.

No stitches

There are no stitches to remove, there is only a small wound that will heal itself, although may gape open a little after a few days. You need only to seek medical advice if it is persistent or have excessively smelly discharge or inflamed.

Bruising

Some swelling and bruising of the scrotum and testicles is normal, but if it is severe , you should contact the clinic.

Sex after vasectomy

Sexual activity may be resumed when you feel comfortable, usually after about one week. However, it is important to continue using contraception until follow-up testing confirms that no sperm are present in the semen. This is typically assessed with a semen analysis around 3–4 months after the procedure.

Complications

Complications such as infection, bleeding or blood collection (haematoma), and ongoing scrotal discomfort are uncommon but recognised. Please contact us if you experience any concerns so we can provide appropriate care. While no procedure is entirely risk-free, we are committed to managing any issues promptly and supporting you throughout your recovery.

Continue Contraception

It is essential to continue using contraception until you have been formally advised that your semen tests show no remaining sperm. A vasectomy is over 99.9% effective; however, there remains a small failure rate of approximately 1 in 2,000, even after clearance. While no procedure is 100% effective, vasectomy is considered a highly reliable method of permanent contraception and is generally more effective than female tubal ligation.
