You can usually return to normal daily activities such as walking, sitting, sleeping, shopping, and light household tasks straight away. Office-based work can often be resumed the next day. Yes. Medicare provides a rebate for eligible vasectomy procedures under item number 37623. The current Medicare rebate is up to $228.00. DVA coverage may also apply for eligible patients.
Most of our patients experience no pain or only mild discomfort during and/or after vasectomy. Individual experiences vary, but most patients report pain scores between 0 and 3 out of 10 during the procedure and in the first few days afterwards. Severe pain (> 7 out of 10) is not expected and should prompt medical review. Contact the clinic if you have any concerns.
We advise avoiding sexual activity for 1 week after the procedure to allow time for healing. After this period, we generally recommend 2–3 ejaculations per week to help clear any remaining sperm from the reproductive tract. It is important to continue using contraception until a follow-up semen test confirms that no sperm, or only an acceptable level of non-motile sperm, remains after the procedure.
Scalpel Free Vasectomy is performed under local anaesthesia. Patients who choose to take the optional oral sedative are advised not to drive for the remainder of the day following the procedure.
Patients who choose not to have sedation can usually drive home after the procedure, provided they feel comfortable and it is safe to do so.
Vasectomy should be considered a permanent method of contraception. Although vasectomy reversal may be possible, success rates can vary and cannot be guaranteed. Reversal is generally a more complex procedure, is often performed under general anaesthesia, and may involve significant costs.
