About Dr. Raj Selvarajan

Dr. Raj Selvarajan , a Specialist General Practitioner with extensive vasectomy procedural experience, established the first Scalpel Free Vasectomy Clinic in Australia in Mackay in 2014. Since then, he had expanded his services to Brisbane, Cairns, Sunshine Coast,  Burpengary East, North Lakes and Springwood in Queensland and Wagga Wagga in NSW.

With over two decades of experience and having performed thousands of vasectomies across the UK and Australia, Dr.Raj is committed to providing comprehensive information and guidance to support informed decision-making and patient-centred approach to permanent contraception.

Vasectomy is a medical procedure that carries potential risks and complications, as well as the benefit of permanent contraception. A thorough consultation is essential to understand the procedure and ensure it’s the right choice for you. We also recommend considering a second opinion from an independent doctor to support your decision-making process.

Training and qualifications

Dr Raj Selvarajan completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in India in 1998. He subsequently undertook postgraduate surgical training in the United Kingdom, where he completed training with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

He later pursued vocational training in General Practice and became a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP), UK in 2004.

Dr Selvarajan has completed the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) Special Skills Module in Vasectomy, a structured vasectomy training program delivered in the UK.

Doctors trained in Scalpel Free Vasectomy have to undergo specific training experience in this technique. Dr.Raj works hard to share his expertise with doctors across Australia about this procedure, as both a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland and as the Course Director for Clinical Procedures for Healthcert (visit Healthcert  for more information).

Dr Raj is passionate about doctors in Australia being formally trained in the scalpel free technique, thereby ensuring the best outcomes for Australian men.

Dr.Raj in collaboration with HealthCert International and Skills for Medics training providers, had developed RACGP-accredited, hands-on practical vasectomy training courses in Australia. His commitment to teaching not only empowers other practitioners with advanced skills but also ensures men across Australia have greater access to high-quality, minimally invasive vasectomy services.

Scalpel Free Vasectomy Clinics are dedicated to providing men with Scalpel Free Vasectomy procedures (SFV).

How busy is Dr Raj in the procedure room?

We typically perform between 8 to 12 vasectomy procedures per day, averaging around 30 procedures each week. While demand can vary—often increasing after school holidays—every procedure is approached with the same level of care and clinical attention.

Vasectomy is a medical procedure and, like all surgical interventions, carries potential risks, including infection or failure. At our clinic, we use evidence-based techniques and follow strict infection control protocols to help minimise these risks.

Our priority is to ensure that every patient is well-informed, supported, and comfortable throughout the process—from consultation to aftercare.
